ROM-BAR ITALIA, 2010

Jason Vigneri-Beane <jcvb@splitstudio.com>

Site: Informal Settlements and Relocation Zones, Italy, European Union

Primary Function: Bar/Cafe

Expanded Function: Micro-Node for Social Life of Self-Organized and Property-Deprived Communities

Audience: Displaced Romani Populations in Italy

Project Statement:

The ROM-BAR is a portable bar/cafe unit with "plug-and-play" utility hook-ups that are supplemented with rooftop photovoltaics and a rainwater catchment basin. It concentrates its functions in a compactly programmed structure and encourages social attraction to itself around its exterior. It is less a building and more a transportable micro-node that aspires to give displaced communities and informal setlements some version of the bar/cafe-as-socialization-center that undisturbed Italian communities require.
