Project Statement

Stripped-Down Shelters (S*D*S) are part of an on-going project to consider technologically intensive yet minimally spatialized shelters. Mechanisms, prefabricated assembly systems, and transformable componentry are all factors toward a specific and self-contained architectural entity.

SDS.06 : Working Volume = 10'-0" x 6''-6" x 8'-0" (520 cubic feet) / / / Overhead Storage Volume = 10'-0" x 7''-6" x 3'-0" (225 cubic feet) / / / Operable Legs = 4 / / / Shop Windows/Counters = 5 / / / Signal Lights = 10 Lateral + 2 Head + 2 Rear / / / Programmable LED Signage

SDS.06 - the Quad-Shop Waterbug - is a quadripedal vendor kiosk that can raise or lower using mechanical legs and inverse kinematics. Quad-Shop's capabilities for lifting itself off the ground can be used for the security of the kiosk when the vendor is unavailable, to make its footprint available when it is closed, and to avoid such natural calamaties as mild flooding. It features a spring-cushioned vendor kiosk with overhead storage that is mounted to four operable legs. In addition, the Quad-shop is outfitted with a programmable LED sign, five operable vending windows with counters, and an array of exterior lighting fixtures that signal the vendor's availability. SDS.06 is ideal for small scale markets adjacent to harbors, lagoons, bays, rivers, swamps, marshes, bogs, melting ice and poorly maintained urban infrastructure involving the circulation of fluids.
